Our strategy and direction
How we’re shaping a stronger, fairer future for people and the money advice sector across Scotland.
The Money Advice Scotland plan for a fairer future
See the steps we’re taking to create lasting change.
-
Improving financial wellbeing
Our plan sets out how Money Advice Scotland will work towards a fairer Scotland where people can improve their financial wellbeing, access high‑quality money advice and be treated fairly when experiencing debt.
-
Navigating a changing landscape
The financial landscape continues to shift, creating new challenges for individuals, communities and the money advice sector. People need clearer routes to support, and organisations need stronger, more resilient systems.
-
Strengthening advice and policy
Effective change requires strong advice services, accessible financial education and a commitment to influencing the policies and practices that shape people’s lives. Our plan builds this foundation for long‑term fairness.
Our purpose
Problem debt can have a profound impact on people and disproportionately affects those on lower incomes.
People may not always know where to turn for help, while the complexity of financial products, services and debt solutions can make it difficult to understand the options available. At the same time, organisations providing free money advice face increasing demand and significant pressures on their workforce. We believe people experiencing debt deserve to be treated fairly, with dignity and without stigma.
We will work towards this by supporting and developing the money advice workforce, helping people access the information and support they need, improving financial wellbeing and advocating for fairer policy and practice.
How we get there
-
Helping people deal with money and debt problems is complex and demanding. High-quality advice depends on advisers having access to high quality training, professional development and appropriate support for their wellbeing.
We will:
deliver comprehensive learning and development opportunities that support the professional growth of money advisers;
develop leadership opportunities that strengthen skills and create new advocates within the sector;
support advice organisations to make effective use of digital innovation;
provide training and resources that promote adviser wellbeing; and
gather evidence and insight into the structural factors affecting workforce wellbeing and use this to influence positive change.
-
We recognise how difficult it can be to ask for help with money or debt. People can experience financial difficulty for a long time before seeking advice, often facing significant stress and hardship along the way.
We want people to be able to access appropriate information, guidance and support throughout their lives, whether they are facing a financial crisis or simply want to feel more confident about their money.
help people access free, independent and expert money and debt advice;
deliver evidence-based financial education and money guidance; and
support employers to promote financial wellbeing in the workplace.
-
We will use our position as Scotland’s money charity to advocate for better outcomes for consumers, people experiencing debt and the money advice sector.
We will:
listen to money advisers and use their evidence and experience to inform our work;
identify and respond to emerging causes of consumer harm;
work with partners and allies to build a strong movement for positive change;
ensure the voices of people with lived experience help shape policy and challenge stigma and misconception; and
produce robust, independent research that informs debate and influences policy.
