Money Advice Basics for Non-advisers


This half day course is aimed at those who work in a non-advisory capacity with people who may need debt or money advice. This includes non-advisory staff in advice agencies, support staff in charities and community groups, and staff in organisations such as Credit Unions.

Course Description

The purpose of the course is to give non-advisers a general grounding in the basics of debt advice to help them best support their clients.

Topics covered include:

- The principles of money advice and the money advice journey;
- Talking to clients about money;
- Helping clients with budgeting;
- Best practice for sign posting and referrals;
- The truth behind common money and debt myths.

This course will involve role play.

Course level: Support staff / Non Advisers

Additional Details:

 - This course will start at 13.15p.m. - and finish at 16.15p.m.
 - Tea/Coffee and biscuits will be served

  • While Money Advice Scotland always endeavour to be as fair as possible in the allocation of training places, the final allocation of places will be at the discretion of Money Advice Scotland.


  • If any expenses are to be repaid by Money Advice Scotland, valid VAT receipts must be provided to ensure reimbursement.

Cancellation Policy

  • Cancellations must be sent by email to Money Advice Scotland ( no later than three days prior to the date of the event where an admin fee of £20 will be charged.
  • Any changes to the original application will incur an admin fee of £20.
  • Money Advice Scotland reserves the right to cancel any course at any time in the event of low take up or any other valid reason.
