Debt Advice - General Steps

Money Advice Scotland is primarily a support agency for those organisations and individuals who provide a free, independent, confidential and impartial money advice service to the general public. As such, we don't provide an advice service directly to the general public.

If you are experiencing debt problems, we strongly advice that you get in touch with an agency in your locality which can help you. Click here to search for an agency nearby to where you live or work. Alternatively, feel free to call us on 0141 572 0237 and we will look up the details of your nearest free advice agency on your behalf.

There are also some excellent resources available online which provide general money advice.

We particularly recommend the Scottish Government's Dealing with Debt leaflets and the National Debtlines online factsheets and self help pack:

  • The Scottish Government have produced leaflets entitled "Dealing with Debt: Finding Your Feet". An online version of these leaflets can be viewed here (link will open in a new window)
  • National Debtline is a national telephone helpline for people with debt problems in Scotland, England and Wales. The specialist advice they give you over the telephone is backed up with written self-help materials which they can send out to you for free. Their free phone number is 0808 808 4000. They also provide a large number of fact sheets and a self help pack available to download from here (this link will open in new window)
