Financial Capability Programme

About Financial Capability

As stated in Money Advice Scotland’s Strategic Plan for 2015 – 2018, we believe that when it comes to addressing Scotland’s financial well-being, prevention is better than cure. Our goal is to radically improve the financial health and wellbeing of the people of Scotland, and it is this goal which has played a pivotal role in the creation of our new Financial Capability Team.

The Financial Capability Team

Created in November 2014, the Financial Capability Team members bring with them a wealth of experience from across the private, public and voluntary sectors.

This Team are responsible for the national enactment of the Financial Capability e-Learning Module, an interactive online learning tool which has been created in conjunction with the Accountant in Bankruptcy and the Money Advice Service.

The purpose behind this tool is two-fold:

  1. To provide mandatory financial education for individuals undergoing insolvency proceedings (in line with the Bankruptcy and Debt Advice (Scotland) Act 2014).

  2. To improve the overall financial wellbeing of the people of Scotland, through the provision of free information on how best to manage finances, both in the everyday sense and in looking to the future.

Our Financial Capability Team are dedicated to the nationwide promotion of financial inclusion and are working continuously to develop relationships and networks across a range of local authorities and organisations.

Delivery of the Financial Capability e-Learning Module

The Financial Capability e-Learning Module is designed to be as flexible and adaptable as possible and as such can be delivered through three separate methods:

  1. A link to the e-Learning Module allowing the user to work through the e-Learning Module at their own time and pace.  Users have access to our support line if they need help or guidance as the work through the different sections.  A certificate is available upon completion of each individual section.  The e-Learning module is open to anyone.

  2. The Financial Capability Team have developed tailor-made workshops for each individual subject covered by the module. These workshops bring the e-Learning Module to life and feature specially designed interactive resources to reinforce the learning within each section of the e-Learning Module.  The workshops are designed for members of the public.

  3. Staff and volunteers from organisations with financially vulnerable clients can be trained to deliver the above-mentioned workshops to their service users. Training and workshops can be customised so that it becomes suitable for a wide range of organisations, for example, any employer who has an interest in improving the financial wellbeing of their staff might be interested in this delivery format.

If you would like to learn more about our Financial Capability workshops and training for trainers, please contact the team on 0141 572 0452.

Money Advice Scotland’s Financial Capability Team are very pleased with the overwhelmingly positive response to all three of these delivery formats throughout Scotland, from Dumfries and Galloway to Aberdeenshire.

This is an exciting time for the Scottish money advice sector and one which Money Advice Scotland are proud to be contributing to through this newly-created team.
